Check Price on Amazon →Cleaning a wood stove or pellet stove with a shovel and a regular shop vac is how a fine gray film ends up on every shelf in the house. Stove ash is finer than a standard shop-vac filter is built for, so some of it blows straight back out the exhaust. An ash vacuum fixes that with a finer filter and a metal canister and hose, which is the whole reason to own one.

Best Ash Vacuum: PowerSmith PAVC101
PowerSmith built this one for fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves and grills. It has a 10-amp motor, a metal canister, a heat-resistant metal hose and a washable, replaceable fire-resistant filter. Casters and a 16-foot cord let it double as a small shop vacuum, and it comes with a metal nozzle, two extension wands, a brush nozzle and a turbo nozzle. It was sold by Amazon when we checked.
The listing says it handles warm and cool ash. We'd still treat it like the others and vacuum only ash that's gone cold, for the reasons in the safety section below.
Compact Pick: Snow Joe ASHJ201
The Snow Joe holds 4.8 gallons in a metal canister and uses two filters, a pre-filter and a pleated cartridge, which the listing says resists clogging. It has a 4-amp motor, a 3.9-foot metal-reinforced hose and an 11.8-inch aluminum nozzle, and it's ETL approved. Snow Joe says it's for cold ash. The short hose means you set it right beside the stove. It was sold by Solutions by Staples.
DEWALT Pick: DEWALT DXV04A
A 4-gallon metal canister with a 4-foot metal hose, an aluminum extension wand and an 8-foot cord, for about 12 feet of reach. It uses a cartridge filter plus a pre-filter and is rated for ash below 104F, per the listing. It also works as a general vacuum for corners and car interiors. It was sold by JND Clean Direct, not Amazon.
Biggest Tank: VEVOR 5.3-Gallon
The largest canister here, 5.3 gallons of SPCC steel on casters, with a washable polyester bag outside a HEPA filter. It has a 13-foot cord and a 5-foot hose, and a blower port on top. VEVOR says to use it only for dry ash after the fire is fully out. It was sold by Amazon.
Vacuum Cold Ash Only
Common Questions
Can I use a regular shop vac for ash?
You can for big chunks, but a standard shop-vac filter lets the finest ash through and blows it back into the room. That's why ash vacuums use fine filters, and why most use a metal can and hose.
Do I need an ash vacuum for a pellet stove?
It's where they earn their keep. Pellet stoves make fine ash that collects in the burn pot and heat exchanger. Every vacuum here lists pellet stoves.
How often should I clean the filter?
Whenever suction drops. The PowerSmith and VEVOR filters are washable; let them dry completely before you use the vacuum again.
The Rest of the Wood-Heat Kit
A wood stove fan moves the heat into the room, a firewood moisture meter tells you the wood is dry enough to burn clean, and a firewood rack keeps it that way. If you split your own, see our log splitter and kindling splitter guides.
