Tank-top heaters and some forced-air propane heaters are not - Mr. Heater describes its Tank Top for outdoor heating, and the Amazon listing says "outdoor use only." This guide covers the Buddy series in detail and explains where the outdoor heaters fit.

The Picks
Mr. Heater Portable Buddy - Our Pick
Per Mr. Heater, the Portable Buddy (MH9BX) runs at 4,000 or 9,000 BTU, heats up to 225 square feet, and connects directly to a 1 lb propane cylinder or to a 20 lb tank with an optional hose and filter. It has piezo ignition, a fold-down handle, an oxygen depletion sensor, and an accidental tip-over shutoff. It weighs 10.6 pounds and has a 1-year limited warranty.
On run time, sources differ. Mr. Heater's spec table lists 3 hours on high and 6 on low from a 1 lb cylinder, while the Amazon listing says 2.4 hours on high and 5.4 on low. Plan on the lower numbers. For longer sessions, a 20 lb tank with Mr. Heater's hose and filter is the usual setup.
Mr. Heater Little Buddy - For Small Spaces
Per Mr. Heater, the Little Buddy puts out 3,800 BTU, heats up to 95 square feet, runs on one 1 lb cylinder (5.6 hours per its spec table), and weighs 5.85 pounds. It has a single heat setting, push-button piezo ignition, a low-oxygen shutoff, and a tip-over shutoff. It suits a hunting blind, ice-fishing shanty, or small room, not a two-car garage.
Mr. Heater Buddy FLEX - More Heat, Same Cylinder
Per Mr. Heater, the Buddy FLEX produces up to 11,000 BTU, heats up to 275 square feet, and runs about 2 hours on high and 3.5 hours on low from a 1 lb cylinder. Its safety systems are a low-oxygen shutoff, a tip-over switch, and a thermal shutdown. It also has side compartments and an accessory port. Mr. Heater's page describes the heat spread inconsistently (both 180 and 360 degrees), so we don't rely on either.
Mr. Heater Big Buddy - The Most Heat
Per Mr. Heater, the Big Buddy has three settings (4,000, 9,000, and 18,000 BTU), heats up to 450 square feet, and runs on two 1 lb cylinders or a 20 lb tank with an optional hose. Mr. Heater says it runs up to 11 hours on two 1 lb cylinders. It weighs 17.1 pounds and has the same low-oxygen and tip-over shutoffs. The Amazon listing, titled Big Buddy PRO, adds a built-in fan that combines radiant and convection heat. Choose it for spaces closer to its 450-square-foot rating, such as a larger garage or workshop.
What About Tank-Top and Forced-Air Propane Heaters?
They put out far more heat, but they are a different category. Mr. Heater's 45,000 BTU Tank Top mounts on a 20 lb tank and is described for outdoor heating; its Amazon listing says "outdoor use only." Mr. Heater's MH60QFAV forced-air heater (30,000 to 60,000 BTU) is marked "Indoor-safe: No" on its product page. These suit job sites and open outdoor areas, not a closed garage. If you want an outdoor heater for a patio or deck, see our patio heater guide.
How to Size a Propane Heater
Start with the square footage the maker lists, then adjust for insulation, ceiling height, and how cold it gets. A 20 x 20 foot garage is 400 square feet, which is within the Big Buddy's rating. A 10 x 10 foot room is closer to Little Buddy or Portable Buddy range. For a garage you heat every day all winter, a hardwired electric heater may be more practical - see our garage heater guide.
Common Questions
Is a Mr. Heater Buddy safe to use indoors?
Mr. Heater lists the Buddy series as indoor-safe and equips them with an oxygen depletion sensor and a tip-over shutoff. They still produce carbon monoxide, so use CO alarms, follow the manual's ventilation instructions, and never use one while sleeping in a tent, camper, or vehicle, as the CPSC warns.
Can I run a Buddy heater from a 20 lb tank?
The Portable Buddy and Big Buddy can, with a hose. Mr. Heater's Portable Buddy page calls for a hose and filter, while the Amazon listing for Mr. Heater's 10 ft hose says its material eliminates the need for a fuel filter, so follow your heater's manual. The Little Buddy and Buddy FLEX product pages list only a 1 lb cylinder. Mr. Heater states that unauthorized accessories are prohibited and void the warranty.
Propane or kerosene?
Propane Buddy heaters are smaller and use disposable cylinders or a grill tank. Kerosene heaters hold more fuel for longer run times and higher output but need 1-K kerosene and have their own ventilation rules. See our kerosene heater guide.
Comparing sizes? See Mr. Heater Buddy vs Big Buddy, or kerosene vs propane.
Bottom Line
For most garages and workshops, the Portable Buddy is the pick. The Little Buddy suits small spaces, the Buddy FLEX sits between them, and the Big Buddy handles the largest areas. Keep outdoor-only heaters outdoors, and put a CO alarm wherever you run any of them.
