Choose Propane If...
You want a small, light heater you can carry and start quickly, you already have a propane grill tank, or you need heat for a few hours at a time. Mr. Heater's Buddy heaters have an oxygen depletion sensor and tip-over shutoff and are listed by the maker as indoor-safe. See our propane heater guide and Buddy vs Big Buddy comparison.
Choose Kerosene If...
You want longer run time per fill and more output from one heater, and you're willing to store 1-K kerosene and follow the ventilation rules. Check your local rules first - Massachusetts says unvented kerosene heaters are illegal to sell or use there. See our kerosene heater guide.
Common Questions
Which is safer indoors?
Both release carbon monoxide. Mr. Heater lists its Buddy heaters as indoor-safe with low-oxygen shutoffs; the CPSC says kerosene heaters also give off nitrogen dioxide and need ventilation. Whichever you use, run a CO alarm and follow the manual.
Which is cheaper to run?
That depends on local fuel prices and how you use it, so we don't give a single answer. Compare the heater's BTU rating and run time with what fuel costs you locally.
Bottom Line
For portable, occasional heat: a propane Mr. Heater Buddy. For longer run times and more output from one heater: a kerosene heater like the Sengoku HeatMate or Comfort Glow KW-24J. For a garage you heat daily, see our garage heater guide.
