Best Generator Cords for 2026: 30-Amp L14-30 Cords Compared

Every setup in our transfer switch and interlock kit guides ends with the same part: one cord from the generator's 30-amp outlet to the inlet box on the house. The cord has to match the plugs on both ends and be heavy enough for the load.

What to Look For

Plug type. A 30-amp generator outlet for home backup is commonly an L14-30R: a four-prong twist-lock with two hots, a neutral, and a ground, carrying both 120V and 240V. The cord needs an L14-30P plug on the generator end and an L14-30R connector for the inlet. The twist-lock keeps the cord from pulling loose. Check your generator's outlet panel and your inlet box to confirm both match.

Gauge. All three cords here are 10-gauge, per their listings, and each is sold as a 30-amp cord. A lower gauge number means thicker wire.

Length. Longer cords lose a little more voltage, so buy the length that reaches from a safe generator spot to the inlet and no more. The CDC says to keep generators at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, so measure from there.

Common Questions

Can I use a regular extension cord?

To run individual appliances plugged directly into the generator, yes. The CPSC says to use heavy-duty outdoor extension cords rated for more than the load, with all three prongs and no cuts or tears. An L14-30 cord serves a different purpose: it connects the generator to an inlet box that feeds a transfer switch or interlock.

Can I plug the generator into a wall outlet with a double-male cord?

No. The CPSC warns that backfeeding through a wall outlet can electrocute utility workers and neighbors. Use a transfer switch or an approved interlock installed by a qualified electrician.

What about 50-amp generators?

Some larger generators have a 50-amp outlet instead of, or in addition to, the L14-30. A 50-amp connection needs a heavier cord with matching 50-amp plugs and a 50-amp inlet. Buy the cord that matches the outlet on your generator and the inlet on your house.

How should I store it?

Coil it loosely, hang it indoors, and cap or bag the ends to keep out dirt and moisture. Check the jacket for cuts before each use.
